The Gears so far only have appeared in one level in the Dark Castle Series, which is the Clock Tower. They are not an Enemy, but more Obstacles. They stay in one place, moving the two ropes in the middle of the level up and down.

To get to the the Black Forest from the Clock Tower one must pass the Gears, as long as they are not touched, Prince Duncan will not be harmed.
